TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY

We are anxious to meet your child and welcome him to our program! The purpose of this letter is to inform you of what will be happening the next 45-60 days of your child’s stay. Our mission is to use work and wilderness to instill and enhance a true sense of direction in each student’s life. We welcome each parent to be actively involved in their child’s progress and experience as much as possible. To facilitate this, you will be able to participate in a weekly family therapy session with your child and our therapist (Via Speaker Phone). A guide will also be assigned to your child and will have open communication with you once every week to give you updates on how he is progressing. In addition to this your child will receive individual and group therapy weekly to address behavioral and substance abuse issues which will be reinforced daily through their interactions and positive peer culture.

This is a diversion program for teen boys between the ages of 12 and 18. It is a farm/outdoor therapeutic work experience program, with a wilderness flavor. Elements of work and outdoor activities will be combined to provide a unique educational experience for your child. The work element of our program gives your child the opportunity to work off community service, restitution hours and fines (if necessary). Students will have the opportunity to work at The Journey Impact Ranch where they will take care of a variety of animals and participate in the daily milking of the cow. Work projects include training llamas, working for the forest service and a local farmers in need of help.

Your child will have the opportunity to participate in a 6 day wilderness trek. He will learn outdoor wilderness skills including: bow drill fires, outdoor cooking and shelter building. The purpose of the outdoor element of our program is to give the students an opportunity to be out in the wilderness, building confidence, setting goals and focusing their life.

Saturdays will include recreational activities if the youth have earned them. If not, they will have a work assignment. Service projects, parent days, ropes course activities, and off-site field trips will also take place. Social skills development group will be held nightly. Sundays will be less active and allow time for homework, reading, and worship. A 30 minute visit with parents or guardians is allowed every other Sunday, but not required. Non-denominational services will be provided for youth who choose to participate. Your child will be expected to behave appropriately and will be recognized and rewarded for his behavior. He will have the opportunity to rate his daily performance on a scale of 1 to 4, and will keep a journal of his progress, feelings and goals.
